about

Following last year’s outstanding 2 track release, ex.sses welcomes you back into their galvanizing soundscapes for ‘undo me’.

This time the expanse is broader and unforgiving. A space built upon yearning and loss. Emotions swarm across all 6 tracks - born from a flurry of sentiment tied to two haunted bodies, attempting to come together but never quite reaching a resolve.

Blurred-out silhouettes of their contours are initially discovered on the sketched out sounds of ‘below the membrane’. A familiar ghostly vocal breaks through the sedimentary sound longingly leading into the cascading broken percussion of ‘bite down’. High-speed beats pressurize into a manic 5-to the floor search that suddenly finds you on ‘don’t worry’. The evolved beat is coated in whining pitched-out loops, complimented by distorted vocals, both craving reconciliation. The pursuit for eachother is driven onwards by the hollowed out yet explosive kick on ‘enhance (for yao)’. Voices calling out into the abyss whilst searching for meaning, fall into an echoing delirium of drums. A prelude to the EPs pinnacle, ‘undo me’. A song that is seeping in loss and shedding of self, serves as a space for rebirth.

my skinless body, moves slowly
I want to feel, and to hope.
When you do,
I want to feel and to hope
undo me
a shedding

Bonnie’s intimate yet harrowing voice outlines the melody shaped by the subterranean bass. Their operatic vocal distortions unpeel the layers of emotion and sound, navigating the listener to the closer, ‘scratch the surface’. Fuzzy glitches and corpses of vocal loops ascend into dubbed out beats and sung-out melodic yearnings. The conclusion is unresolved but basslines echoing in harmonic resolution hint to reconciliatory rebirth.

‘undo me’ is an impressive artistic milestone that builds on ex.sses’ previous sound. They have unrestrainedly constructed a remote atmospheric expanse whilst also deploying their harsher sonic tools to hammer the listener back into a tangible club-ready space.
